Testing your car battery

Are you having trouble starting your car? There may be an issue with your battery. A good battery recharges quickly and maintains its charge. If your battery is over five years old, or you suspect that it might need replacement, a battery test is a simple way to check the battery quality.

A battery test will require a voltmeter. Before starting the test, be sure to wear gloves, goggles, and protective clothing to protect yourself from battery acid. Turn off the ignition and all of your car's lights. Next, connect the red, positive battery terminal to the red lead on the voltmeter. Then, connect the black, negative battery terminal to the black lead. A good battery should give a reading of 12.4 volts or higher. Remove the leads in reverse order.

The professionals at Gregoris Nissan in Valley Stream can test your battery and replace it if necessary. Schedule an appointment today.
